After seeing the photo of Donna Karan in the July issue of Vogue and reading the article about this 60+ woman who looks at least a decade younger, after looking over her fall line, and after discovering that she designs clothes for the times when my budget allows me to spend more extravagantly (Donna Karan), as well as clothes that are sensitive to my usual checking account balance (DKNY), I became smitten.

I've been searching for a way to define my style. To be honest, I've been striving to determine my style. I want to be consistent. As I told you in an earlier post, I'm reading I Love Your Style, by Amanda Brooks, and it has been helping me pull my threads together. I asked Kristin how she would describe me, and she said, "refined edgy." She said I put on pants from New York & Co and make them look like top designer. I'm going to embrace that compliment. However, my search continues. I want a go-to designer. So, I looked through my Vogue Collections 2011. You know I used to post and post about Stella McCartney, but I'm not the minimalist I thought I was. Celine is great, but also too minimalist. I've spent hours on youtube trying to find a connection. No success. I'll keep you posted.

I'm searching for vibrant color in unexpected places. Like Phoebe's take on Celine, but with the surprise of a bright color under a panel.

Any way, this runway show is one I viewed. Considering Donna Karan's mission for DKNY, perhaps I'll have a match.

Quest for Length -- I gotta scratch

Okay, I tried the gel twists and love them. But, it's been a week, and I have to scratch. So, I decided to try gelling the sides with crispy gel and letting the top have it's usual curlies.

I just made the trip from Sally's Beauty Supply Store, and these are the tools for this venture.

I am extremely excited about the Sure Coiffure: "Easy Wrap Holds Hairstyle." It is designed to hold the sides and back in place while you're sleep.

I told you I am ditching pants and am doing dresses this season. When everyone else has on jeans, I will have on a casual, throw on dress that fits the occasion. I browsed through Macy's today. Ordinarily, I am not a fan of Macy's. It became junky after it merged with Hechts. But, they had a serious collection today. Okay, the dresses are here (you can't tell how awesome they are because they are not in 3-D); now I have to wait for the money to come.

I took Ran to get a massage today at Liz's. Words cannot describe how phenomenal Liz is. She's not a masseuse; she a massage therapist, a therapist who stays abreast of medical conditions and can work with people with disabilities and limitations.

But, this is what I want to share with you. As soon as you walk up to her door, you are embraced by positive, spiritual energy. No, she doesn't have new wave paraphernalia around. It's just her. Her aura. I will share photos with you during the summer because her garden is amazing. Here are pictures of what's inside of her house. I included a photo of a flower that she took last year. Excuse the glare from the glass frame. Liz has these mesmerizing photos throughout her house.

Magazine Scene: March Vogue

This month's Vogue rivals the September issue, coming in at 2 1/2 pounds compared to September's 3 1/2 pounds. So, you'll definitely work your bi-ceps and deltoids if you plan to stick it in your purse and carry it around with you. This issue is definitely worth the $4.99 newsstand price (why haven't you gotten a subscription yet?)

As you can see, the cover features the queen of eccentricity, Lady Gaga. Before I read the first word of Jonathan Van Meter's article, I expected all of Gaga's quotes to be filled with raunchy language. I also expected to see photos of a brassy, confident woman. Although Van Meter's admits that Gaga uses the "f" word a lot in her stage presence, he shared information about her background that I found surprising: she's a product of what can be interpreted as a highfalutin private school in Manhattan. He describes it as "an institution known for turning out self-possessed young ladies..." Her off-stage language appears to be suitable for a child's ears. In fact, when I put on my glasses and took a closer look at the photos, I saw sparks of innocence in her eyes. (As a side note: she definitely isn't a model. I'd love to hear what Andre Leon Tally has to say about those stiff poses). Jonathan writes that as he tried to remove himself from the backstage chaos after her concert, she "whined like a teenage girl in need of attention,"..."Don't you want to stay and ask me some questions?" I now see Lady Gaga as a kid who has already grasped what she wanted to be when she grew up: "I want for people in the universe, my fans and otherwise, to essentially use me as an escape." I wonder...who is she when removes her make up and puts on her pajamas?

And speaking of queens, this issue fills us in on the engagement of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. Remember I accused Anna Wintour of name-dropping Catherine in her monthly letter to readers in the February issue but not supplying us with photos of the soon-to-be-princess. Well, this month we get to see what Catherine looks like up close. Unlike Princess Diane, her eyes are sparkling with love for her prince. Middleton is adorned in Issa in four out of the five photos, so we know who the hot designer will be in England now.

On a similar note, First Lady Michelle Obama is draped a gorgeous red gown from the House of Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton. You must see it on page 354 to appreciate its splendor.

This issue reminds us that spring is just around the corner. In fact, it reminds us that summer clings to it's skirt tail. With models showing off dresses from Gucci, Dior, Salvatore Ferragamo, and other upscale designers, I have changed my plans for my spring wardrobe. Out with the capris and skinny pants and in with casual dresses with "where did you get those?" flats. I rarely wear jeans -- I only have one pair -- but my wardrobe consists entirely of pants, except for two must-have LBDs (Little Black Dresses). So, I'm searching for frocks that are equivalent to jeans, dresses I can throw on and not look inappropriately dressed when I go to mid-life gatherings (Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Sensory Light parties). As I journeyed through the magazine looking for these dresses I saw that Nina Ricci has conjured up some light weight ones, and I know Eileen Fisher won't let me down. Certainly Loft will have casual skirts I can play down with fun shirts.

I will say this, I will be wearing outfits that allow me to show off my Sperry Top-Siders. Woo! When I turned the page and saw the platinum top-siders, I had an "Oh my God" moment. I hopped out of my cozy bed at 2:00 a.m. to go on line to order them.

As you make your way through the first pages of the magazine (why don't they use page numbers on all of the pages?!), your eyes will fixate on a one piece swimsuit by Michael Kors. It is gorgeous and suited for a woman like me who doesn't get in the water. It is off white, has a leather strap that goes around the waist three times and leather shoulder straps.

Okay, now for the essence of the magazine: the writers' and editors' work. The first article is on page 272, "Nobody's Child." It's a downer for me, but that doesn't mean that Rebecca Johnson didn't provide a well written piece. It's just that I needed upbeat reads this month. To satisfy that yearning, I was intrigued by this month's "Nostalgia," which featured the article, "Stand By Your Man" and the piece about Christopher Bailey who holds the reign at Burberry. This issue gave me a lesson in politics, too. In "A Rose In the Desert," I learned that Syria is considered the safest country in the Middle East. The article is an enlightening story about Syria's first lady, Asma al-Assad. Since I rarely watch the news, I appreciate articles like this one.

I enjoyed all of the usual features and most of the fashion spreads, including "Rebel, Rebel" with models who validated my new interest in make up that makes us look natural; a light touch goes a long way to enhancing our beauty.

It finally happened. I was able to get my sister, Eldora, into a chair for a makeover.

It didn't take much to convince her once she saw the great job Clinique makeup artist, Laura, performed on me.

That reminds me. I need to catch you up on my journey to find an acne fighting cleansing system for adults. Remember I tried Pro Activ and Murad. Now I'm trying Clinique's Acne Solutions. I mentioned it a few posts ago but am just now getting around to it. Aside from the cleansing foam, clarifying lotion, and clearing moisturizer, the system includes a foundation with salicylic acid. The foundation provides great coverage, and my skin can still breathe; it doesn't have the heaviness that MAC and Revlon have.

Oh yeah, and as you can see, I'm back to my natural self.

Magazine Scene: February Vogue

Perhaps the many scrumptious pages of the September and October issues spoiled me because the January and February issues are so slim they are practically hiding in my pile of past issues.

The February issue is definitely worth it's newsstand price of $3.99, though. Don't judge it by Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour's monthly "letter from the editor." She seems to be grasping for action as she speaks of Prince William's engagement to Catherine Middleton. Evidently, there isn't much to say about Catherine right now, and there certainly must be a lack of photo ops, because Anna spent the bulk of her letter reminiscing about the fashionable Lady Diana Spencer (you'll have to google to find more about her). She ended the letter with speculation, "So, with this in mind, a few suggestions for what Catherine could wear..." She included shots of models, "Middleton would look sporty courtside in Celine by Phoebe Philo (on model Raquel Zimmerman). The issue does include the couple's formal engagement photo shot by Mario Testino.

I was intrigued by author, Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts's contribution to this month's "nostalgia." Pitts described her admiration for renowned writer, Lorraine Hansberry (think: A Raisin in the Sun) and the effect it had on her writing. I felt validated as she mentioned the vintage clothing she had scooped up from a yard sale and a small vintage shop (okay, if a successful writer like Pitts can wear gently used treasures, than so can I). She led me through her move from New England (evidently she attended Harvard University because she mentioned her stroll through Harvard Square) to Harlem in New York. But, she ended with, "Guarded beneath [the dresses], I could preserve the energies required for the work of observing, recording, and fighting for the community I loved." Okay, "observing" and "writing" I understood, but she never mentioned that she was fighting. I felt like she dumped me with no closure.

"life with andre' " was pretty informative this month. He provided the scoop on Ralph Lauren's family; both his son and daughter are engaged. Even though his son, David, is marrying into the George H.W. Bush family --- the senior Bush's granddaughter---, David has chosen to be more low-key about his wedding plans. David describes his betroth and himself as an "old fashioned couple." He doesn't want to take the spotlight from his sister, Dylan.

Designer, Manolo Blahnik, promises that his collection will free us from those gaudy 6 inch heels that had women (don't include me in this! You know I'm a flat-heeled diva) stumbling as they attempted to maintain their balance in those sky scrapers.

If you have been swinging lavish healthy-looking hair after using a keratin-based product, beware. Beauty editor, Sarah Brown, reveals: what you are actually swinging is a concoction laced with formaldehyde: That's right, the formula used in funeral homes (I won't go into what it is used for). The infamous Brazilian Blowout brand has been banned in Canada and Ireland, it is still offered here in the U.S. Brown did have success with a product that can satisfy your keratin-fix without the health risk: Paul Mitchell's Awapuhi Wild Ginger KeraTriplex 2-Step Repair Treatment. The Mitchell makers have found a way to embrace keratin without the possibility of subtracting years from your life.

Finally, as you near the end of the magazine and study the artistic display of designer wares on top models, you must pause on pages 186 and 187. It's an all-star line up of gorgeous top Black models.

I used to be an eye shadow maverick. I could mix and apply shadow that rewarded me with compliments from Avon brochure's photographer (seriously) to strangers on the street. Now, I am clueless. I have a ton of colors in my make-up drawer and on my dresser. But, I have lost my touch.

How do I regain my skills? Well, since I have the L'Oreal HIP eye shadow in "platinum," I searched youtube.com and found this tutorial. Geesh, applying shadow has become a complicated task during the past couple of years. And, it requires so many products. Whatever happened to using just two colors and a brush?

Magazine Scene: January Vogue

The January issue of Vogue is pretty skimpy. Anna Wintour and the editors must've known that we are still getting through the September issue.

Highlights: Everyone can see what the geniune cream and beige Louis Vuitton bag looks like. Fakes are every where. Are you one of the naive people who believes that the $60 "authentic" bag in the Asian beauty supply store is an authentic Louis Vuitton? Well, as Vogue's opening ad reveals, "Sold exclusively in Louis Vuitton stores and on louisvuitton.com." Well, that settles that.

Loreal is pushing a product line called, Youth Code. "It's designed to help restore your skin to its most beautiful, vibrant-looking state." Okay, so the assumption is that it's designed for people like me, middle-agers. But, then you turn the page; we turn to "see the results for yourself in this group of iconic beautifies." True, these women look older than the 18 year olds we see dominating the runway and fashion ads, but I'm not convinced that these icons are old enough to need a product that "enhances the skin's capacity for recovery..." a product that "unveils younger-looking skin." But, the six page ad, which includes a woman of every prominent nationality, would inspire me to run out and try it, if I didn't study ads like this. After all, the women look beautiful.

Back in the day when Ann Taylor was the store for the bourgeoise who were shopping in malls instead of heading for Wisconsin Avenue in DC and Rodeo Drive in California to purchase the runway artisans, I passed by in search of the stores with the more trendy outfits. Then suddenly, the brand lost its prestige, and many people were walking by. Well, now the brand has returned to carrying the quality merchandise it was known for. Since I am older and have embraced a minimalist and sophisticated style, I can appreciate the new Ann Taylor.

And, the panel for the 2010 British Fashion Awards agrees. Phoebe Philo, who took over the reigns at Celine a little more than a year ago, won Designer of the Year.

The British Designer of the Year Award seems to be following Phoebe whereever she goes. She won it in 2005 while working as creative director for Chloe, shortly before taking her hiatus from the fashion industry.

Is this really a Lancome retraction?

Okay, so I wrote a post a while back expressing my feelings about Lancome firing Isabella Rosellini from her job as the model (or "ambassador" in industry language) for their cosmetics. As soon as I wrote that, Julia Roberts began gracing the pages of the magazines that satisfy our need for a fashion-fix. True, Julia isn't a teen or tweenie model, so I applaud Lancome for continuing to use ambassadors who are the actual age of their target audience. But, it seems to me that Julia Roberts has scaled down. Halle Barry can be the spokesmodel for Revlon because her skills as an actress are limited. Besides, America loves her because they believe she's beautiful (even though, since her latest nose job, her face has begun to look like it is being chiseled, like she's having fantasies about looking like LaToya Jackson). Queen Latifa can advertise for Cover Girl because, well, somehow she's been getting acting roles in addition to her career as a rap artist. Ellen DeGeneres can model for Cover Girl because she's a comedian and talk show host. But, Julia is an icon. She has won every type of acting award that industry provides. For her to represent a department store cosmetic line suggests that perhaps she is soft-hearted and wants to help Lancome boost it's sales during the sad state of this economy. After all, I'm reluctant to believe that Lancome can afford to pay Julia her usual earnings: $20 million per movie.

I've been wondering where my enthusiasm about fashion, about make-up, about hair, about glamour had gone. And, I found it tonight in BURLESQUE.

As an aside, I had the best birthday celebration I've had in years. Randall was with me, and his friend's (from herein he'll be referred to as Taylor, because that's his name) mother (from herein she'll be called Trish, because that's her name), took the three of us out to dinner to celebrate my birthday. Trish gave me a beeauutiful purple and pink scarf that has other colors woven within it, along with a gorgeous, fun watch. We went to an Italian restaurant that served the best Italian food I've had in my life. I think it was on 198, a place you'd easily miss as you were driving by because the Arby's sign practically diminishes it.

Trish is one of the most open hearted people you could ever meet. I have easily embraced her as my friend.

Afterward, I scurried down the highway to meet C and V for dinner and a movie. Well, since I had already eaten, we chatted as they ate dinner, and I ate the most fantabulous chocolate cake I've had in years. They agreed to see the chick-flick Burlesque. And, from there my life began again.

Beyonce' who? Christina Aguilera has a voice that transcends awesome. She is, at the least, in the same class as Whitney Houston when Whitney was in her prime. Christina has a voice, a pitch, a range that makes her deserving of the label "iconic singer". Tonight I witnessed the difference between a singer who has songs that go platinum because of sex appeal and a singer who deserves awards that exceed platinum if the industry is going to return to one of integrity.

But, that's not what this post is about. I can go on and on, raving about the movie, Burlesque, because I absolutely love it. It's rare that I am interested in buying a sound track of a movie, but I knew I wanted this one before the film reached the half-way point.

Again, that's not what this post is about. This post is about how I studied the make-up. How I studied Cher and Christina's characters as they applied their eye shadow; how I studied it in every scene when they weren't applying it; about how I couldn't wait to get home to open my make-up drawer to pull out all of my L'oreal HIP make-up duos. I scattered them on my dresser. I washed all of my brushes. Because, I'm back; that woman who meticulously applied eye shadow with such care and precision that I received compliments daily. I'm back.

One word before I close this post. You read about my life goal of owning a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes (excuse me for this interruption. If you caught Janet Jackson on Jay Leno and noticed the red soles on her shoes, as a fashionista you knew instantly that they were Louboutin), well, Louboutin featured a pair that was worth a million, easily.

Aside from seeing what will certainly be the best movie in all award categories in 2011, you must see it so you, too, can study the application of eye shadow. The make-up in that movie was all about the eyes.

I just read WWD's Accessories supplement, and I am speechless. Luckily I can still type. There is so much to choose from.

The first blurb, "Story Time" is about Jig Pattni. Pattni (who has surpassed me on the fashion radar, because I have never heard of him) interviews clients to discover their likes and dislikes. He strives to grasps to learn about their personalities, such as the type of food they like, the magazines they read. He takes this information and makes a unique piece of jewelry, a one-of-a-kind piece, that symbolizes their character. I wonder what my piece would look like. My favorite food: Coldstone's Strawberry Blonde served in a graham cracker bowl and Olive Garden's lobster spaghetti (why in the world did they stop selling that?!). As for magazines I read, you already know them: Vogue and Elle (I discontinued my subscription to Bazaar).

We have the opportunity to pay more at Payless. Designer Isabel Toledo has developed a collection for Payless customers. The shoes will costs $35 to $60.

Another interesting piece of information for those who have to squeeze their dollars pretty tightly: designers such as Glory Chen, Longchamp and Chrissie Morris have created shoes and handbags that are multi-functional. Shoes become boots by adding a knee high piece of leather on top of the shoe. They also feature reversible hand-bags.

This fall's fashion hits: * fanciful feathers that appear on gloves, handbags, shoes and necklaces.
* shimmery accessories in silk, satin, and shiny leather. *six-inch tie-up boots *art carved ancient art, such as skeletons, unicorns, and owls. *vintage wear, particulary handbags (I suspect Kristin will be torn between this piece over here and that piece over there as she browses through these creations). *tarnished shoes and handbags that resemble pieces of silver that has been sitting on the dining room table of your grandmother. *loafers These wares captivate me because they includes fashionable flats along with the 4 inch heels. *and of course creations from last season: fur and animal print all over the place, from shoes, hangbags and jewelry.

I love WWD's creativity in their supplements. This time this must-have publication for high-end designers went over-the-top by developing a section called "Shadow Dance". The section includes "the shadow of the models". The models have been blacked-out; the only color on the pages is the accessory they are wearing.

My Age Is Beginning to Haunt Me

I absolutely love youthful clothes. Yesterday I showed up at the school at which I'm subbing in grey spandix pants with zippers that came about three inches above my ankles. I proudly wore a man's t-shirt that covered my asset. I complimented my attire with a rope necklas with big rings on it by Mix It Up. Was the outfit too youthful? Well, it had the same effect as this one:

Can a 48 year old get by with that?

I'm not sure, so I checked out MORE magazine. It prides itself as being the magazine "for women of style and substance". It's target audience is women my age. The website looks pretty good.

Although it takes me an entire month to get through my ELLE and Vogue magazines, I'm going to pick up a copy of MORE to see whether it includes fashionistas my age who are edgy chic.

Tidbits - My search for the right make-up and toiletries

I had been trying various shades of MAC foundation; a trial and error based on the recommendations of their sales representatives. In an earlier post I told you about a MAC foundation that made my face look like I had grabbed a jar of mustard from my fridge and slathered it all over my face. Another MAC rep reasoned that my chest has yellow undertones, but my face has hints of red. She recommended a foundation that made me look like I had washed my face in the red clay mud that is found in the yards of new housing developments. But lo' and behold my ideal match wasn't on the MAC display counter. It was waiting for me to give up my fear of wrapped make-up --- make-up that I couldn't try on first --- that is found in retail stores such as CVS, Target and Walmart. Yesterday I reached for a bottle of Revlon Color Stay while I was in CVS. I found my match immediately ---Color Stay's Golden Caramel. I wore it today, and I absolutely love it. Okay, let me confess. I did open the bottle to peer at the color before I marched up to the CVS counter with my $21.00 find. You know what else was remarkable, according to the ad above the display, I wear the same color as Halle Barry. That aside, I didn't kick MAC completely out of the picture. I brushed their Mineralized Skin Finishing Powder over my Revlon gem to set it.

In keeping with this blurb about make-up, it was interesting to find out that L'oreal is the international top mass make-up producer, according to WWD. Okay, so I walked by their make-up display when I was searching for foundation. However, I have been loving their Garnier Fructis Fortifying Cream Conditioner since I bought it a couple of weeks ago. I have a big bottle of the Triple Nutrition. I had spent years avoiding mass market brands because of the alcohol in them. I was convinced that the exorbitantly priced alcohol-free products sold in health food stores, as well as the high-end brand, Aveda, had to work miracles on my hair leaving it luxuriously soft. Wrong! Evidently my hair has developed an addication to alcohol, because this mass-market L'oreal brand (Garneir is a subsidiary of L'Oreal) has given me the softness for which I have been yearning for no more than $4 for a 13 ounce size. That sure beats a $30 bottle of Aveda of the same size.

September: The Biggest Month in Fashion

All of us fashionistas know that designers' must-be-seen Fashion Week occurs in September. Though several cities throughout the world present their own versions of Fashion Week, the creme de le creme appear in New York, Paris, Milan, and London. We will be seeing the wares designers have been sweating over during this past year. Designers will showcase their best work as their models walk down the runway. And, though the Fashion Week scene seems to be geared towards the highfalutin, the designers are actually seeking our approval. Afterall, they can't pay their mortgage by selling the one couture dress on the runway. they need for us to yearn for the more affordable interpretations.
Of course, I will be bringing live-from-the-runway video footage to you as I gather it from my sources.

Speaking of affordable interpretations, in WWD's Accessories Supplement, shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwoods says he will not scale down by creating a line for the average fashionista like us. (WWD's reporter was more tactful in her choice of words. She asked him, "Would you ever do something a little more price accessible?") According to Nicholas, "I've been asked, but I just don't feel like it's right for my brand image. You can tell immediately if a shoe is made in China."

I'm wondering, should we add that to our vision: to be able to afford fashion that is not price accessible?

September also brings the biggest issues from the best-in-fashion magazines. You know my favorities: Vogue, ELLE, and Bazaar. My Vogue arrived with 726 pages. It is so heavy, I can't carry it around with me. I have to keep it in my car where I can spend my lunch recess curled up in my car totally enthralled.

The ELLE issue presented 562 pages. It came about 2 weeks before the Vogue (guess the postal workers had a hard time lugging those 4 lb Vogue mags around. Yes, I actually weighed it -- 4 pounds!)

When I was younger, I was drawn to one particular gorgeous model in fashion magazines (I've always been a mag addict). It took me a couple of years to even look at the product she was advertising. Lancome. I yearned to use the products, simply because this amazingly beautiful woman was evidently using them.

After a few years, I realized there was a new face in the Lancome ads. I didn't know why -- until now. I was scanning the style.com website today and saw her in a picture with her Burberry handbag collection. I googled and stumbled upon a 2002 article in http://www.vogue.co.uk/. As it turns out, Lancome dumped this woman with ageless beauty six days after her 40th birthday. Reports say a Lancome head honcho told her, "Be grateful Isabella. You're lucky you lasted so long in the business." Uh...so, what does that say about the brand's credibility when it comes to their anti-aging products -- products the brand was advertising even at that time.

No worries. Isabella didn't sink. She went on to become an actress, filmmaker, author and philanthropist.

I am captivated by the Italian Vogue's website (www.vogue.it/en). No wonder Italy is becoming the new fashion capital of the world. The magazine made Vogue history in 2008 when it put out the infamous Black Vogue (that is what it has been referred to) including at least 100 pages of Black supermodels photographed by the infamous Steven Meisel. Models included Liya Kebede, Sessilee Lopez, Joudan Dunn, Naomi Campbell and others. I am striving to get a copy of the issue.

If I find out this photo is copyrighted, I'll have to remove it. Sigh.

News to me: Limited, Express, Victoria Secret, and Bed, Bath, and Body are owned by the same corporation.

Unlike Marc Jacobs, Bulgari can rely on our sense of smell not our lustful desires. (See my earlier post of Marc Jacobs ad) Instead of having Clive Owen naked with his legs gapped open in its ad for its new fragrance, Bulgari for Men, the brand has chosen to do a head shot.

As you know from an earlier post, I adore Betsey Johnson's quirkiness. She has just signed a deal for her own line of fragrances and personal care products, and from what I gather, we're in for something scent-ual. Betsy says, "If I don't get compliments [on a fragrance], if guys don't like it, I throw it out the window." She didn't say much to describe the scent except, "It ain't gonna be au naturel, sweet, foodlike - like chocolate -- or patchouli."

Speaking of au natural, more Black Americans are saying goodbye to the eurocentric look. According to statistics published in the July 9, 2010 issue of WWD, by 2011, relaxer usage will decline 23%.

My daughter and I have used these two product lines and have had amazing results.
